Day one report
Well day one was a tale of two segments. First 50 miles out of San Diego were challenging as we climbed the majority of our daily total of 8000 feet. The second half was an opportunity to make up some of that time. All in we did 120 miles. Perfect result of the first day as we finished up in Calexico. This should set us up for a perfect finish to the week as we still target Tempe on Friday night. Let’s see if we can deliver. What happened today?
Bad- I had 2 flats. One in front and one rear. Oh well.
Good- great send off from Dog Beach in San Diego. Jerry came down from Del Mar to help send us off.
Bad- It was warm! Plus the climb made for challenging first morning.
Good- We beat our target and got to 100 miles and felt strong enough to go another hour.
Good- We traversed a 7 mile downhill with a 6% grade. I have never experienced anything similar. Descended over 2000 feet on that part of the ride.
Good- Both Jane and Reuben surpassed their 50 mile targets.
Good- Cool place for lunch. Cowboy motif.
Good- Rode past some great hay fields (only some were impressed).
Obviously much more good than bad. Big day tomorrow- not a lot of climbing but let’s see how our bodies react to a tough first day.
